Partimos desde la plaza de Juan Carlos I hacia la plaza de la Iglesia de San José, descendiendo por la calle Mayor hacia la carretera CV-841 que enlaza Algueña con El Cantón (Murcia). Caminamos por la carretera con viñas y bancales de almendros a ambos lados y una vez pasado el mojón del punto kilométrico 1, a unos 50 metros a la izquierda sale un camino asfaltado que nos lleva hasta las Casas de la Herrada, hasta una bifurcación donde hay un poste vertical indicando el camino a seguir a nuestra derecha.
Continuamos ascendiendo por el camino asfaltado entre campos de almendros hasta que finaliza, adentrándonos por un camino pedregoso hasta el inicio del barranco. La ruta discurre por el fondo del barranco en continua ascensión entre pe3dregales y con una vegetación muy densa que, en tramos, entre los puntos directrices 5 y 7 necesita una labor de desbroce pues dificulta la normal circulación por el sendero.
Al final del barranco, nos desviaremos hacia la izquierda con más pendiente, pero con menos vegetación, ascendiendo por la ladera hasta un cerro donde está situado el siguiente poste vertical que indica a nuestra izquierda la cumbre de la Penya Grossa que alcanzamos con facilidad y donde finaliza el recorrido. La vuelta se realiza por la misma ruta.
